Annoyed with Everything Lately? Here's Why (2020)

A significant number of us (humanity) have been in some form of containment since mid-March when pro-sports leagues, hotels and many businesses shut down quickly due to the COVID-19 epidemic. None of us have experience with any kind of shutdown like this and none of us have lived through any air-born pandemic. I send positive thoughts to those who are suffering directly from COVID!

The rest of us have been affected, albeit indirectly. We have had events and milestones get pushed and rescheduled—vacation, education and career plans have all changed. But to some degree or another we’ve all been stuck at home. Has it been your experience that every little thing is getting on your nerves?

Ann Masten, Ph.D., psychologist and professor of child development at the University of Minnesota recently explained to Bustle:

"It's harder for us to be compassionate right now, we are emotionally taxed. People don't become better under crisis; they revert to a lower level of emotional function."

There has been so much to process this year, between the natural disasters, pandemic, social unrest, US presidential election and everything related. It’s simply too much for the brain to process and we don’t have the ability to put on our best face for conflict. This manifests differently for different people. For some it’s explosive anger, for others it’s antsiness, insomnia or even other more serious mental health issues.

The most important thing is to be patient with people around you who are not coping. Whether it’s on a grand scale with protests and rioting, or on a more intimate level with friction between you and a loved one, this is less about them and more about the circumstances, which we all hope are just temporary.
