Ask a Boudoir Photographer: “Should I cancel my photoshoot appointment if I'm on my period?”

Should I Cancel My Boudoir Photoshoot If I'm on My Period?

Question:

“Hi Chicago Boudoir, I have a question. I just booked my boudoir photoshoot and I’m excited about it! But I just checked the calendar and I’m going to be on my period the day of my session. Should I cancel?”

Answer from Chicago Boudoir:

Absolutely not! 😊

The short answer: No—you do not need to cancel your boudoir photoshoot just because you're on your period.

Let’s talk about it, because this is one of the most common concerns we hear and the answer might surprise you.

Your body is welcome here always

Your body doesn't have to be at its "best" to deserve celebrating.

Life does not pause for ideal timing, and your confidence should not either.

Being on your period is completely natural, and it does not stop you from having an incredible and empowering session.

Your Boudoir Photoshoot Takes Place in a Safe, All-Female Environment

At Chicago Boudoir, we have a 100% female staff. You will be surrounded by a team that understands exactly what you are experiencing. There is no awkwardness and no judgment, just support.

We have worked with many women in the same situation, and we know how to make you feel comfortable and confident from the moment you walk in.

We have you covered

If you forget supplies, do not worry. We keep tampons and pads at the studio, so you do not need to bring anything extra or make a last minute stop. We take care of the small details so you can focus on enjoying your experience.

We've even put together a full guide with seven simple ways we support you during your cycle, from complimentary supplies to little comforts that help you feel your best. You can read more in our blog, 7 Simple Ways We Support Period Care at CBP.

Feeling bloated before your boudoir photoshoot is completely normal

If you are feeling a little bloated, that is completely normal. We will guide you through flattering poses, lighting, and angles that highlight your best features. And if you're feeling a little puffier than usual, don't stress. Between flattering posing, beautiful lighting, and our professional retouching, you'll still love your final images.

Most women feel amazing anyway

This is something we see all the time. Women come in a little unsure, and leave saying they are so glad they did not cancel. Once your session begins, the nerves fade and your confidence takes over. Your photos are not defined by your cycle. They are defined by your energy and how you show up.

If you are unsure, just reach out. We are always here to talk it through with you. Your body does not need to be perfect to be celebrated. It just needs to be yours. 💫

Ray’s Story

I was literally sitting at my computer with the reschedule email half written.

I had been looking forward to my boudoir shoot for weeks. I picked out outfits I loved, counted down the days, and kept imagining how confident I would feel walking into the studio.

Then I checked my calendar.

My period was scheduled to start the morning of my shoot.

Instantly, everything shifted. I felt bloated, uncomfortable, and honestly just not like my best self. My first thought was, There is no way I can do this now.

I even started drafting the email to reschedule.

But something made me pause.

I remember thinking, If I keep waiting for everything to feel perfect, I might never actually do this.

So instead of canceling, I reached out and told them what was going on. Their response immediately put me at ease. They told me I did not need to cancel, that this was completely normal, and that I would be taken care of.

So I kept my appointment.

When I arrived, I was definitely nervous. Not just the usual nerves, but that extra layer of self consciousness that comes with feeling off in your body. But that feeling did not last long.

Knowing the studio had a 100% female staff made a huge difference. I did not feel awkward or embarrassed bringing it up. They were completely unfazed and supportive. They even let me know they had tampons and pads there if I needed anything, which honestly made me feel even more comfortable and realize they’d already thought of everything.

As the session went on, something shifted.

I stopped focusing on how I felt physically and started focusing on how I felt emotionally. I started to feel confident. Strong. Beautiful in a way I had not expected that day.

They guided me through poses that made me feel amazing, and everything was designed to flatter my body exactly as it was. The bloating I had been so worried about became such a small thing. And knowing they could photoshop out a little bloat if needed took even more pressure off.

By the end of the shoot, I was laughing, moving freely, and completely in the moment.

When I saw my photos, I was honestly shocked.

I remember saying, I cannot believe I almost canceled this.

I had never seen myself that way before. Not perfect, but confident. Soft and strong at the same time. Just me, but elevated.

Looking back, I am so glad I did not reschedule.

There will never be a perfect time. Your body is always changing, life is always busy, and something will always come up.

But this experience? It was still absolutely worth it.

If you are thinking about canceling because you are on your period, I get it. I was there too.

But trust me. Do not cancel!!
