Rest In Power, Ruth Bader Ginsburg
We received sad news to go into the weekend: Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away on Friday at the age of 87. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a feminist icon and the second woman appointed to the United States Supreme Court.
After graduation from Columbia Law School, Ginsburg had challenges in finding a legal job due to her gender, despite a strong recommendation from a future dean of Harvard Law School. She eventually found work as a clerk for a judge and went on to hold faculty positions at Rutgers and Columbia Law.
She co-founded the ACLU’s Women’s Rights Project and focused her efforts on cases that promoted equality for women. She argued many cases before the Supreme Court.
In 1993 she was named to the Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton and was confirmed by the Senate with a 96-3 vote (it’s hard to remember a time where that kind of agreement was possible!). She was generally viewed as a moderate at her time of appointment.
Ginsburg became more liberal leaning as time passed and she was consistent in her defense of women’s rights. Her life was a focused one and regardless of one’s political orientation, Ruth Bader Ginsburg should be remembered as a great pioneer for women’s rights. Rest in Power.
