Ask a Boudoir Photographer: "Can I do a boudoir photoshoot after a mastectomy?"

Can I Do a Boudoir Photoshoot After a Mastectomy?

Question:

“Hi Chicago Boudoir, I have a question. I recently had my breasts removed after a breast cancer diagnosis. For a variety of reasons, I decided not to have reconstructive surgery, so I’m basically flat. My body looks very different now, and I’m still adjusting to it. I’ve always loved the idea of doing a boudoir photoshoot, but now I’m not sure if that’s something I can still do. Is boudoir even possible after a mastectomy?”

Answer from Chicago Boudoir:

This is a question that many women quietly carry after going through such a life changing experience. When your body changes in a major way, it can affect how you see yourself and whether you feel comfortable being photographed.

But the truth is that you absolutely can do a boudoir photoshoot after a mastectomy. And honestly, I’ve photographed many women who felt nervous asking this exact question.

Boudoir photography is not about having a “perfect” body. It is about honoring your story, celebrating your strength, and capturing the beauty that exists in every stage of life.

Your Body Tells a Powerful Story

A mastectomy is not just a physical change. It represents strength, resilience, and everything you have been through on your journey.

Your body has carried you through something incredibly difficult. That story deserves to be honored, not hidden.

For many women, a boudoir session after a mastectomy becomes a powerful way to reconnect with their body and see themselves in a new light.

Boudoir Is About Confidence and Empowerment

Boudoir photography is about far more than appearance. It is about how you feel when you see yourself.

Many women come into their session feeling nervous or unsure, especially after experiencing changes to their body. But through thoughtful posing, gentle guidance, and a supportive environment, the experience often becomes something deeply empowering.

It can be a moment to reclaim confidence and celebrate yourself in a way that feels meaningful and personal.

Your Session Is Always Tailored to You

Every boudoir session is personalized around your comfort level, your story, and how you want to feel during the experience.

Some women choose to openly embrace their scars and see them as part of their strength and survival story. Others prefer softer styling, certain angles, or wardrobe pieces that feel more private and subtle. There is no right or wrong way to approach your session.

We can incorporate pieces like lace robes, bodysuits, oversized sweaters, draped fabrics, or implied-style posing depending on what feels most comfortable to you. Some women love artistic silhouettes or close-up detail shots, while others prefer beauty portraits, softer lighting, or poses that focus less on the chest area altogether.

The goal is never to make you feel exposed or uncomfortable. My job is to create images that help you feel confident, beautiful, respected, and fully yourself.

Before your session, we will talk through your comfort level, preferences, sensitivities, vision for the experience, and what to expect in a boudoir photoshoot so that everything feels supportive and personalized to you.

You Are Still Beautiful

A mastectomy does not take away your beauty, your femininity, or your worth.

Your body is still deserving of celebration, love, and appreciation. Boudoir photography can be a powerful reminder that beauty is not defined by perfection. It is defined by strength, resilience, and authenticity.

A Celebration of Strength

For many women, a post-mastectomy boudoir photoshoot becomes more than just a photography session. It becomes a celebration of survival, courage, and the journey they have been through.

It is a way to honor where you have been and recognize the strength that brought you here.

Your story matters. Your body matters. And you are absolutely worthy of being celebrated.

Practical Tips for Your Boudoir Session

If you are considering a boudoir after breast cancer, a few simple wardrobe choices can help you feel more comfortable and confident during your session.

You might choose wardrobe pieces that make you feel beautiful, such as lace robes, bodysuits, bralettes, or soft fabrics that drape naturally. Some women prefer outfits that gently cover scars, while others feel empowered highlighting them. Both approaches are completely valid.

Communication with your photographer is also important. Let them know your comfort level, any sensitivities, and what you would like to highlight or keep more subtle in your images. An experienced boudoir photographer will guide you with poses, lighting, and angles that flatter your body and help you feel confident.

Most importantly, give yourself permission to move at your own pace. There is no pressure to pose in any way that does not feel right for you.

You Are Not Alone in Feeling This Way

Many women wonder if they will still feel feminine, attractive, or confident after a mastectomy. These feelings are far more common than people often realize.

It is completely normal to need time to adjust to your body after such a major experience. A breast cancer survivor boudoir session is not about pretending nothing changed. It is about honoring who you are now and allowing yourself to be seen with compassion.

Megan’s Story: “After My Mastectomy, I Didn’t Know If I Could Ever Feel Feminine Again”

A couple of years ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Like many women in that situation, I had to make some very difficult medical decisions. In the end, I chose to have a double mastectomy. It was the right choice for my health, but emotionally it was much harder than I expected.

I also made another decision that people sometimes don’t talk about as much.

I decided not to have breast reconstruction.

For me, it felt like the right choice medically and personally, but it also meant that my chest is now completely flat. After the surgery, my body felt very unfamiliar to me.

For most of my life, I had associated femininity with having breasts. When they were gone, I struggled with how I saw myself. I remember looking in the mirror and wondering if I would ever feel feminine again.

Before cancer, I had actually thought about doing a boudoir photoshoot someday. But after the mastectomy, that idea felt impossible.

Boudoir, in my mind, was something for women with a very specific kind of body. I didn’t feel like I fit into that world anymore.

But over time, as I healed, something inside me started to shift. Surviving cancer changes the way you look at your body. Instead of seeing it as something to criticize, I slowly started realizing how strong it really was.

Still, the idea of doing a photoshoot with a flat chest made me incredibly nervous.

Eventually I reached out to Chicago Boudoir and explained my situation. Liz was incredibly compassionate and reassured me that boudoir sessions can be styled in many different ways depending on what feels comfortable.

She explained that we could use robes, soft fabrics, lighting, and different poses to create beautiful images that highlighted my strength and femininity. Nothing about the session had to feel exposing unless I wanted it to.

That gave me the courage to book.

The day of the shoot, I was emotional walking into the studio. But Liz created such a supportive environment that I started to relax pretty quickly. She guided me through every pose and made sure I felt comfortable the entire time.

By the end of the session, I didn’t feel “less feminine” anymore. I just felt like myself again.

When I saw the photos later, I cried. Not because they hid what I’d been through, but because they showed me that I was still beautiful after it.

Doing the session didn’t erase everything cancer took from me. But it helped me reconnect with myself in a way I honestly didn’t expect.
