5 Common But WRONG Assumptions About Boudoir!

I love working as a boudoir photographer, it’s a truly empowering and rewarding industry. However, there are still challenges to working as a boudoir photographer, and most of those challenges center on misconceptions around what “boudoir” actually is. The “taboo” nature of shooting intimate photography makes it difficult to dispel all of the misunderstandings because people just can’t bear to discuss it!

Hopefully I can clarify a few things about boudoir and educate! It’s really a great, empowering experience.

  • Boudoir is porn: Pornography is culturally defined, so no one can make a blanket statement about what porn is or what it isn’t. For example, pornography was very different in puritan times vs 2020. The purpose of boudoir is to create visual art that shows an individual’s intimate feelings and sexuality. Most importantly, Boudoir is an artistic creation to be usually shared only with a very small audience or even kept to one’s self-not for a mass audience or commercial use.

  • You have to get naked for a boudoir shoot: Absolutely not! Boudoir is a portrayal of intimate moments, showing feeling and emotion. Sexuality is usually one of those emotions, but not always! I can portray sexuality with posing, lighting and coaching you on everything you need to do. Nudity is NOT a requirement.

  • “I’m not the kind of woman who does a boudoir shoot!”: I would be the last to push anyone into anything they feel uncomfortable doing. For some, a boudoir shoot may just be too much. On the other hand, boudoir can be a great experience for ANY woman. There is so much body-shaming in just about every society, and women deserve a break—to feel beautiful. It would be difficult to complete a boudoir shoot and NOT say they feel beautiful, empowered and energized. I have had all kinds of women shoot with me, including doctors, nurses, lawyers, kindergarten teachers, rabbis, pastors, psychiatrists, psychics, actors, piano teachers and many more!

  • Boudoir is only for women that look like Victoria’s Secret models: WRONG. WRONG. WRONG. Boudoir is about celebrating your body and owning your look! All bodies are beautiful! Curvy is beautiful! See my guide for lingerie for curvy gals.

  • You will share my pictures on social media: You see the photos on my site and assume that everyone I shoot has to put their photos online. Not the case! If you have a particularly fantastic shoot, I may ask to use your images, but only if you agree to a model release.

On the other hand, though it’s a wonderful experience, boudoir does take courage. When did anything that was worth it come easily???
